Diabetes Causes

Diabetes is a set of related diseases in which the body cannot regulate the amount of glucose in the blood.

Glucose in the blood gives us the energy to perform daily activities such as walking, running, riding a bike and the ability to perform day-to-day chores.

In type 1 diabetes --which usually occurs early in life--the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to process the sugars in the foods that we eat.

Type 2 diabetes typically occurs after age 40, and is more of a lifestyle disease. There’s enough insulin in the body, but we lose our ability to utilize it. It’s caused by poor diet, obesity, and lack of exercise. Roughly 90-95% of all diabetics have type 2 diabetes.

If you’re over 45, have a family history of diabetes, or are overweight, please get yourself tested.
